Types of Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the cells of the breast and although it is common in women, it also affects men. It is the second most common cancer after lung cancer and it typically starts with a lump and if unchecked could spread beyond the breast. When this happens it will be called metastatic breast cancer and will affect areas such as the bones, the liver, the lungs and the brain.

Colon cancer, also called colorectal cancer or bowel cancer involves cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and the appendix. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide. Often, this type of cancer starts with mushroom-like growths in the colon called adenomatous polyps. Removal of these polyps during colonoscopy therefore reduces the subsequent risk of the condition. Lung cancer is a disease that occurs in the lungs and involves uncontrolled cell growth.

Kidney cancer is another cancer type that originates from the renal tubule and the renal pelvis of the kidney. There are two common types of kidney cancer. One is the renal cell carcinoma and the other is the renal pelvis carcinoma. Cancers that originate in the renal tubule are renal cell carcinoma and cell adenocarcinoma while those that originate from the renal pelvis are transitional cell carcinoma.

Other cancer types include anal cancer which originates in the anus. Bladder cancer is when abnormal cells grow in the urinary bladder while uterine cancer occurs in the uterus. Lymphoma is a type of cancer that starts in the lymphocytes of the immune system.
